




Size
Zambia is landlocked, and bordered by eight countries namely; Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The land area is some 752,000 sq km. Zambia is fortunate in not having a shortage of rivers. The southern border is the mighty Zambezi river. There are several large rivers, lakes and swamps throughout the country. Capital city is Lusaka.
Political System
Multi party democracy.
Economy
Zambia is rich in minerals such as, among others, copper, cobalt, lead, zinc, coal, gold and gypsum. Copper accounts for 80% of the country's export earnings. The agricultural industry is showing signs of relatively strong recovery.
Currency
The Kwacha. Travellers cheques and foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and bureaux de change. The best currency to carry is US$ or British Pounds (Preferably US$) in relatively low denominations. Credit cards are not readily accepted in the more remote areas.
Climate
Zambia's elevation - average of some 4000 feet above sea level – ensures that the country is generally blessed with a moderate climate. Summer
(Sept – Nov) is hot and dry. Dec - April is warm and wet with some humidity. May - August is cool and dry. Game viewing is at its best during the dry season (June – October).
Language
English is the official language and is widely spoken.
Health
It's a good idea to consult with your local immunization authority or personal physician before you travel to Zambia, in order to find out what vaccinations/medications are required or suggested. Malaria is endemic.
Food
Food and drink of excellent quality is provided in the camps. The main towns have good supermarkets for those who are driving themselves.
Safety
Zambia is considered one of the safer destinations in Africa.
Visas
Citizens of most countries need visas for entry into Zambia. This list does change from time to time, so do check with us regarding requirements at the time of your intended visit.
Arrival
Upon arrival at one of South Africa's international airports you will be welcomed by one of African Odyssey Safaris' team who will assist you with any formalities, and then transfer you either to your flight to Zambia, or to your hotel. On arrival in Zambia you will be met by a representative of the company whose camp you will be visiting first. He/She will assist you by ensuring that you are transferred to your flight to your camp.
Clothing
During the day and evening in Summer, lightweight cotton and cotton blend clothing is suitable. In Winter it can be cold in the evenings and early mornings and a warm jacket and long slacks are a good idea.
Well, those who will be visiting Botswana's Okavango Delta in the next few months are in for a treat! Every year this magnificent wonderland gets inundated by flood waters originating from the highlands of Angola. The waters arrive at the top or "panhandle" of the Delta in about January and get to the "end" of the Delta in June or so.
