Moremi View

No description of the Okavango is complete without the famous Moremi Game Reserve - one of the finest wildlife areas in Africa. In fact the two are part of each other in that a large part of the Moremi Game Reserve encompasses the Okavango Delta.

Moremi though is probably most well known for areas like Chief's Island, Xakanaxa lagoon, the Khwai River area and the adjoining mainland. This part of Moremi offers some of the most stunning game viewing in Botswana. Not only is the area rich in Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog and Hyena, but also Elephant, Hippo and a wide variety of antelope. It is also blessed with a selection of some of the finest luxury safari camps and lodges. It is an area of the Okavango-Moremi complex that should form part of any visit to the greater Okavango Delta. The landscape alone is one of the most beautiful in Botswana.

Game drives are possible all year round in the eastern sector of Moremi as well as motorboat excursions along the main channels. Birdlife generally is superb and some of the heronries on t Elephants right of way

he islands will provide a lasting memory when visited during the breeding season. Unfortunately, walking and night drives are not permitted within the boundary of Moremi.

Moremi Game Reserve owes its establishment directly to the local Batswana tribal people. As a result of their concerns for the future of wildlife in this pristine area they - under the leadership - of Mrs Moremi the then Regent decided that the area should be protected. It was named after the late Chief Moremi the Third, and proclaimed in 1963. These people - and all Motswana - are justifiably proud of the magnificent legacy that has been created.

Community owned lodges are being established in some areas adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve - an indication of the community's commitment to preserving this magnificent wild area.

Brian Kemp has actually managed lodges in Moremi.
