Pemba, renowned for its Portuguese colonial architecture is a port town on the south side of the world's third largest natural bay. The stunning Quirimbas Archipelago consists of 32 coral islands stretching from Pemba to the Rovuma River, which forms the natural frontier between Tanzania and Mozambique. This area remains a relatively unexplored tourist paradise.
Key highlights are...
- Some of the richest coral reefs in the world
- Quirimbas National Park
- Atmospheric and historic Ibo Island
- Pemba – gateway to Quirimbas Archipelago
- Pristine white beaches
- Niassa Reserve – exciting new wildlife destination
Pemba is a prime destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts. It is the access point for the mystical Quirimbas Archipelago. Some of the islands in the south include a vast expanse of forest in the Quirimbas National Park. The 1,500 sq km marine area of Quirimbas National Park includes 11 coral islands stretching for 100km.
These islands feature phenomenal vertical drop-offs, some up to 400 meters down. These walls abound with coral covered caves and tropical fish ranging from gobies to mammoth Napoleon Wrasse, as well as game fish. Feeding and nesting grounds for the park’s population of sea turtles, dugong, dolphins, sharks and whales are also found here.
Snorkelling, fishing and diving doesn't get better than in these waters!
Ibo Island is probably the most visited in the Quirimbas Archipelago, due to its fascinating history and beautiful old buildings. To the north of Pemba, historic Ibo Island is beautiful, remote and untouched by commercial developments; and one of the most intriguing, idyllic and romantic islands you could dream of visiting. Three forts, an old catholic church and numerous ancient trading buildings stand guard over the sea. Pirates, ivory and intrigue and the slave trade, featured on this little palm-fringed coral island.
A new and spectacular destination - the largest conservation area in Mozambique - the Niassa Reserve, covers parts of Cabo Delgado Province and Niassa Province and is twice the size of the Kruger National Park.
This huge wilderness preserve, covering 42 000 square kilometres, is only just being discovered and contains by far the greatest concentration of wildlife in Mozambique.
