Famous for its magnificent dunes,
Sossusvlei also boasts the highest dunes in the world (up to 400m high). This is a special place and is a sight worth experiencing, with the dunes varying in shades of red.
Key highlights are...
- Spectacular multi coloured dunes up to 325 metres high
- Sesriem Canyon
- Hot air balloon flights
- Namib-Naukluft Park
- Namib Rand Nature Reserve
- Desert Horses
- Fish River Canyon
Sesriem, the narrow canyon which is the gateway to Sossusvlei means "six thongs" which is what pioneer farmers in the area had to use to lower buckets into the pools in the narrow canyon. The thongs were invariably made of cowhide.
Some 60 kilometres south of Sesriem is the largest private reserve in Namibia - the Namib Rand Nature Reserve. It is also possessed of spectacular variations in landscape, making the whole area a highly sought after destination.
Oryx, Springbok and Ostrich are common as are a great variety of water birds in the rainy season. Other animals which may be spotted in this area include hyena, hartebeest and zebra.
Some excellent luxury camps are established in the area and one can experience the stillness and stark, yet profoundly spiritual atmosphere that only the desert can impart.
The awesome Fish River Canyon, one of the largest in the world - about 160 km/260 miles long up to 25km wide and 550 metres/1800 ft deep in places - is well worth experiencing - particularly if you enjoy hiking.
