Walking safaris are the best way to get closer to nature, to see it up close and to feel it. Here your scent is not masked by the smell of vehicle fumes and you will soon learn that unless you obey the natural law of not advertising your presence you don’t get close to the game.
Key highlights are...
- Learn about the environment
- Easy paced walking
- No heavy packs
- Great for bird watching
- Home comforts in the evenings
The accent on walking safaris is not distance but quality of experience. Essential items are a hat, good walking/hiking shoes, binoculars and a camera.
Your armed and very experienced guide and tracker will introduce the smaller creatures, plants and spoor, and you will also have the experience of stalking some of the larger mammals. Elephant are common and frequently encountered but mostly viewed from a distance. Lion and cheetah are seen less often. Depending on the area, Wild Dog sightings are rewarding and quite possible during the dry season.
Should you need to take advantage of the chance to watch a lion or leopard kill, then a vehicle can be called up so that you can take full advantage of the opportunity. In the Delta you may even feel the urge to enjoy a mokoro (dugout canoe) outing instead of walking.
Having led many walking safaris myself in the past I have to say that it is the only way to really feel as though you are sharing the same “space” as the animals you are watching. It is a very special and humbling experience - one that you will remember for the rest of your life.
I highly recommend it!
